Originally developed by E.I. Du Pont de Nemours, this technology is now used in over 140 applications in over 30 Du Pont plants worldwide. Now marketed by Monsanto Enviro-Chem Systems under licence to Du Pont, Monsanto have installed over 160 systems in a variety of applications worldwide.

The heart of the technology is the reverse jet, wherein the scrubbing liquid is injected counter-current to the gas stream in an open duct. The correct selection of gas and liquid flow rates and velocities results in the formation of an extremely turbulent "froth zone" where the liquid meets the gas stream. This provides highly efficient scrubbing in a non-clogging environment.

This provides the following advantages:

  • High efficiency gas absorption and particle removal from very dirty gases
  • The ability to handle gases containing sticky solids
  • The ability to scrub with high strength slurries such as lime or magnesium hydroxide
  • High efficiency fine particle removal
  • Minimized maintenance requirements from having no internal components

Hlsmelt Corporation Ltd, Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant

Environmental Group Scope of Work:
Full design process, mechanical, structural, E&I and piping of a Flue Gas Desulphurisation plant including supply of key components. The FGD plant also produces a reusable byproduct, producing commercial grade gypsum.

Equipment Supplied:
  • Dynawave scrubbing vessel, 8m dia. x 20m high. Largest FRP vessel built in Australia.
  • FRP exhaust stack, 3.3m dia., total height 60m above ground.
  • Lime Slurry System including storage silo, vent filter, feeders, mixing tanks & agitators
  • Oxidation air reactor, 5.3m dia tank, with 185kW motor drive.
  • Slurry Dewatering Plant including hydroclone bank, horizontal belt filter, vacuum, process pumps & tanks.
  • Slurry recirculation pumps various sizes up to 215kW motors.
  • Rubber lined steel storage tanks. 100, 50 & 5m3.
  • Detailed fabrication drawings for structural steelwork superstructure, including access stairs and platforms.
  • Detailed piping isometrics and pipe support details.
  • Valve and instrument datasheets & schedules.
  • Detailed functional control specification for programming.
